How to read damage numbers in League of Legends. The difference between total damage and damage to champions, what DPM (damage per minute) and damage share mean, role-by-role targets, and why more damage doesn't always mean more impact.

That happens because there is more than one damage number, and because "amount" and "value" are not the same thing.
This guide covers the kinds of damage, what DPM means, role-by-role targets, and how to read damage without being fooled by a big number.
The first thing beginners miss is that damage comes in different kinds.
The numbers on the scoreboard and on trackers are measuring different things.

When people say "damage leader," they usually mean total damage — but that inflates easily from waveclear and jungle farm.
What you should judge by is damage to champions, and DPM once you divide it by time.
DPM is damage to champions ÷ minutes elapsed.
So 21,000 damage to champions in a 30-minute game is 21,000 ÷ 30 = 700 DPM.
Why divide by time? Comparing a 40-minute game to a 20-minute one by total damage is unfair. DPM levels the game length so you can compare output.
Absolute DPM swings hugely with patch, meta, and champion, so memorizing a number is nearly useless. What matters is where you sit relative to your lane opponent and teammates in the same game.
Not everyone should deal the same damage. Expectations differ sharply by role.
Looking at each player's share of team damage makes the role differences clear.
ADC / AP mid: the primary carries — typically 28–35%.
Top (fighter): 18–25%, balancing frontline and damage.
Jungle: 15–22% — ganks and objectives first, damage secondary.
Support: 8–15% (5–10% for tanks) — vision and peel over damage.
High damage share is expected from scaling carries like these — a low share on them is usually a sign they aren't doing their job.

This is the biggest trap: judge damage by value, not volume.
Poking an enemy tank from range all game looks great on the chart, but if it never converts to a kill or an objective, it's just wasted damage.
Champions that spread AoE rack up total damage fast. But unless that damage removes a carry or secures an objective, it doesn't win the game.
Conversely, a low damage share that reliably deletes the right target is winning damage. Who, when, and why you dealt it is what actually matters.
Whether your damage is "high volume, low value" becomes visible once you lay out the match data.
